Fitzroy Island is located only 45 mintute from Cairns, Australia by fast catamaran and yet it is one of the most unspoilt islands adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef. Fitzroy Island is one of 600 "Continental" or "High" islands on the Great Barrier Reef which means it used to be part of the mainland before rising waters separated this tranquil paradise. Over time a fringing coral reef surrounded the island, providing a sheltered home for a variety of fish and coral species. This area now forms part the Inner Barrier, of the Central Region of the Great Barrier Reef. And so this area can be protected for future generations it is part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, one of the several natural wonders of the World.
